Function Description of ACPI Keys

Introduction

PowerKey is an ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface) driver to improve the ACPI functionality performed by Windows operating system, since Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows NT 4.0 operating systems do not fully support ACPI functions.

System Requirements

Installation

Motherboard BIOS Setup

You have to enter the BIOS menu to enable ACPI function and to set [Wake up] key to be the power-on key. Due to different models of motherboards, the option names in the BIOS menu are different also. Here we take the one of the motherboards as an example. The following are the steps for setting BIOS. You may take them for your reference.

  1. Shut down the Windows operating system and restart your computer.
  2. Press [Del] key before Windows restarting.
  3. In the BIOS menu, select 'Power Management Setup'.
  4. In the Power Management Setup window, set 'ACPI Aware O/S' to 'enabled', and 'Power-On by Keyboard' to 'Wake-Up'.
  5. Press [Esc] key to return to main menu.
  6. Select 'Save Settings and Exit' and press [Y] key.
  7. Your computer will restart. When you enter the Windows operating system, you may install PowerKey driver.

Driver Installation

  1. Insert the 'PowerKey' driver diskette into your diskette drive.
  2. Open File Explorer to find 'Setup.exe' from the disk.
  3. Double-click the 'Setup.exe'.
  4. Then follow the screen instruction to install the driver. The installed path is set to c:\powerkey at default. You may change the path as you desire during setup procedures.

Uninstallation

  1. Click Start, then select Programs.
  2. Click PowerKey, then select Uninstall.

Function Description of ACPI Keys

There may be three ACPI keys on the keyboard:

Power off

When [Power off] key is pressed, a confirmation dialog box is displayed on the screen. After you click 'Y', the Windows operating system will be closed and the three LED indicators on your keyboard will be off.

Pressing [Wake up] key can power on the system.

Sleep

When [Sleep] key is pressed, the system will suspend and enter into power-saving mode. The Windows operating system is not closed. You may press any key to return to your previous running status.

Windows NT4.0 doesn't support the Suspend feature, so this key doesn't work when running under Windows NT 4.0.

Wake up

When [Wake up] key is pressed, the system will wake up. Make sure you have set up the motherboard BIOS. Please refer to the Installation section.
